The cotton plant is a heat-loving shrub in the mallow family (Malvaceae), primarily grown for the fluffy cellulose fibers that encase its seeds. Reaching 1 to 2 meters under cultivation, it produces large pale-yellow or cream flowers that later develop into seed pods called "bolls".
Key Botanical Features
Family: Malvaceae (shares a family with hibiscus, okra, and cacao).
Height: Can reach up to 6 meters (20 feet) in the tropics, but typically ranges from 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6.5 feet) under commercial cultivation.
Leaves: Broad, typically 5 to 15 cm long, and divided into 3 to 7 lobes.
Flowers: Usually pale yellow, white, or cream. After pollination, they often transition to a vibrant pink before dropping off.
Growth Cycle & The Cotton Boll
Flowering: Blooms typically appear 60 to 100 days after planting.
Boll Development: After the flower petals fall, a small, triangular green pod—the cotton boll—develops.
Fiber Formation: Inside the boll, the seeds begin to grow elongated cellulose hairs, measuring up to 6 cm in length.
Maturation: As the boll matures, the capsule dries, internal pressure causes the boll to split open, exposing the fluffy white cotton fibers which dry and twist to help the seeds disperse in the wind.
